May 16-20

Greetings Everyone!

We are finished with state testing!  Our final round went very smoothly.  Students completed the first part of the Math Test on Wednesday and the second part on Thursday.  I am very proud of the diligence they demonstrated throughout the entire testing process.  Please congratulate your child on a job well done!

LITERACY

Due to state testing and late start, our literacy this week took place during our Portland Bridge Research and Writing.

All students have finished their research and writing for the creation of their bridge posters.  We will begin presenting the facts and information about each Portland Bridge this week.

WRITING

When not testing we have been busy typing up our published writing to go into our book (anthology).  Thank you so much for donating contact paper and duct tape for this project.

Our 3rd Grade Book of Writing is almost complete.

We will be adding one more writing piece to this book this year as each student writes a fictional narrative.  This writing piece will focus on the narrative writing structure, the development of a central characterproblem-solution format and descriptive word choices.

MATH

In the days leading up to state testing in math, the students reviewed many concepts in their afternoon learning center.

Now that testing is over, we will continue to explore our final unit of the year, double-digit multiplication.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The creation of our Portland Book continues as we updated the book with some of the bridge information we’ve spent time developing.  I am really proud of how deep we’ve gone with this area of study.

We began adding a page to our book for each type of bridge—beamarchsuspension.

We will finish these 3 pages up on Monday, and then  create a page for each Portland Bridge as the students present their posters this week.

ART

In our afternoon learning centers, students have been working on their Nighttime Portland Skyline Collages

Our Portland Mural has evolved.  Cabins and plank roads have been replaced by modern buildings, houses, and roads.  Downtown Portland has been developed, and neighborhoods are growing more populated on the east side of the Willamette.
This week we will begin adding the bridges to the mural in the order they were constructed.

Stay tuned for that progression.
